ANTIQUE BRASS PORTABLE "SILENT BUTLER" ASHTRAY RESCUED FROM A PORT HUDSON, LA/FELICIANA BARN AT NEVILLE PLANTATION -- Distinctive, Monogrammed and WELL-STORED.
Sales Price: $30
As seen in the pictures, this heavy duty brass portable "Silent Butler" hearkens back to the day when a everyone had a pack of Luckies on 'em. Since it was found in an old handbag, we assume it was for a lady to use. (Many old buildings at Neville Plantation survived the burning of the main house in 1927.) No damage whatsoever to the item, so it has kept well over the years. All original with everything in place. The photos are provided to demonstrate the A-1 condition of this old bit of "tobaccoania" removed from a trunk of packed-away women's handbags stored in the loft of a barn we renovated out near Neville Plantation Port Hudson, LA, which I own. I have dusted off & wiped down the ashtray, but have not otherwise tried to clean it. We guess that this probably was made after WW II -- but no later than the 1960's.
It still operates just like it's supposed to -- all hinges and connection points are solid, as seen in the pictures. All you need is the Chesterfields and the habit!
MEASUREMENTS: 2" (or so) wide & 1" or so at the opened aperture. 100% all original. All of the joints, connections and working parts are in good shape. The pictures have a ruler included so you can assess the measurements yourself.
INSCRIPTIONS: On the outside of the ashtray is engraved: ATA We have not been able to discover any other information about the maker -- no maker's mark is apparent.
VERY COLLECTIBLE or would make a great accent piece. I have no guess at its history, other than it appears to have been used in the past by a dame, since it was found inside a purse.
