DETAILS ON THIS ANTIQUE OIL PAINTING: By Joan Metcalf, offered here is a SIGNED ORIGINAL OIL PAINTING by Ms. Joan Metcalf, entitled "Marsh Bird." It is a richly textured oil painting in deep blue Pacific Northwest coastal hues, moderated by striking earth tone contrasts. The heron depicted in the painting is in the center and described within the color palette -- mostly by texture. It is thought provoking and absorbing -- a really lovely work. Usually, Ms. Metcalf presents paintings of northwestern landscapes and coastal scenes, aquatic pond and "fall colors" woodland paintings. Thus, her paintings featuring coastal herons are RARE.
I have been in contact with the artist, who confirmed this work as her original painting from around 1973 and the confirmation comes with the painting as a nice extra. This piece in impeccable condition for something of this age. As noted above, this Metcalf painting is much rarer than those usually seen on the other online sites given the subject. It is NOT seen often. I have enjoyed it and it's now time to find Marsh Bird a new home.
The painting itself measures approximately 20" tall by 18" wide. Within the artist original frame, though, the overall size is 21" tall by 19" wide. The frame is really sharp and has a lot of character. As you can see from the pictures, the artist's original paperwork is affixed to the rear -- along with perhaps the original purchaser -- someone named Blumberg.
