ANTIQUE WHEELING CORRUGATING COMPANY ASH PIT DOOR REMOVED FROM REMAINS OF NEVILLE PLANTATION BRICK-MAKING AND BLACKSMITH FORGE AREA
Sales Price: $230
This is a very distinctive and RARE ash bin or coal chute heavy metal door from Neville Plantation in Port Hudson, LA with distinctive "makers-mark" from the Wheeling Corrugating Co., an implement integrated into forge operations once very common "back in the day." The door was fitted into a chute-inset assembly, all of which is still attached. The Wheeling Corrugating Co. was a leading 19th and early 20th Century manufacturer of ash pit doors, oil cans, tubs, metal ceiling pieces and a variety of other specialty metal items. Finding one of these old ash pit doors in this condition, WITH THE ORIGINAL INSET, is practically impossible now.
The plantation and all attached outbuilding burned in the late 1920's but this antique ash pit door survived among the remains found of the old plantation brick-making and blacksmith forge operations. I have not otherwise tried to clean it -- but it doesn't really need it. It dates from the late 1800's or early 1900's -- at the latest. The chute door and inset are really eye-catching and distinctive -- a very unique piece.
MEASUREMENTS: The old door and inset are BIG -- around 27" wide and 22" tall. The inset measures 21 ½" tall and still sits within its ORIGINAL components with the WHEELING mark boldly evident. Nothing has been removed.
