Original and Marked As Sterling Silver & Stamped w/ 1903 Date
This collectible antique sterling silver spoon is part of a Port Hudson area find, along with other coins, jewelry, historical artifacts, presidential memorabilia, furniture, antiques and collectible notes all gathered during extensive renovations of or relic hunting around old buildings in the Neville Plantation home-site, which I own. We are offering them just as they were found and, if you knock around on this site, you find many other Neville Plantation pieces.
DETAILS ON THIS ITEM: This spoon was retrieved from the area in which Neville Plantation burned in the 1920's. Intricately engraved, this sterling silver souvenir spoon commemorates the Joseph Brant Memorial in Victoria Square in Brantford, Ontario, Canada. It carries a "Sterling" stamp or designation on the reverse, along with the following additional stamp: "R.D. 1903." It is approximately 4" in length -- slightly bigger than demitasse size but not full size either. It is none the worse for wear after its life in the ground for God knows how long -- undamaged and in great condition.
From the Canadian Government Archives site:
Monument for a Loyalist Mohawk Leader
The Joseph Brant Monument was erected by the city of Brantford, Ontario, in recognition of loyalist Mohawk leader, Joseph Brant who fought on the side of the British during the Revolutionary War. In 1784, following the War, Joseph Brant led some 1,843 Iroquois Loyalists from New York State to the land granted them in Ontario by Sir Frederick Haldimand as restitution for their losses in the war. Today, the Six Nations Reserve is located just outside of Brantford. So...how it gets from up there to Port Hudson is anyone's guess.
