This old photograph mounted in an original period frame was found inside a Neville Plantation armoire after I acquired the property in the 1990s. No known photo of Neville Plantation exists....at least insofar as I know. So...what IS this photo? Who ARE these folks? What can we learn from their dress or the style of architecture -- any guess as to dates from those clues? COULD THIS BE A MISSING PHOTO OF NEVILLE PLANTATION in Port Hudson, LA? It was built before the Civil War, endured the siege at Port Hudson (and is mentioned in almost every history of that action), limped along after the war, fell into disrepair after the turn of the 20th Century and burned in 1927 or so. Any guesses from our History Detectives?

Soooo...here is our latest antique "Mystery of the Week," which is a heavy, ornate, intricately machined brass...something-or-other. It is around 7 1/2" to 8" tall and 3 1/2" wide at the base and has no maker's marks of any kind present. It gives the appearance of being a simple late 19th Century/early 20th Century desk paperweight, but the careful machining and detailed manufacturing makes one wonder: Is it something else?
Any guesses from the troops? There are more pictures below: We had a great sale at The Bennett House over the Father's Day Weekend -- our best numbers ever. We appreciated meeting all of our new friends and hope our customers who acquired some SENSATIONAL pieces enjoy them as much as we have. It was wonderful having my nephews, my sister and my Dad present as we chatted with our customers, told antique "war stories" and shared fellowship among folks who live for the enjoyment of all the old things with magnificent tales to tell. Remember, we have no "set" hours -- we open when we want to, close when we gotta but are usually around. If you want to see any of the items on this website personally, zip me an email or give me a call and I will accommodate your schedule. ALSO: If you are one of our customers, please spread the word about our joint if you had a good time or feel our unusual inventory of quality antiques is worth a mention to your circle of friends! |
